Galveston
Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Demonstration Project
The Galveston Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Rail Passenger
Demonstration program is designed to emphasize the advantages of rail
passenger service during peak periods when the Galveston causeway is heavily
congested. The City of Galveston, through a federal funding
authorization secured by U.S. Congressman Nick Lampson, is
chartering passenger rail services from AMTRAK to implement the
project. Funding is currently available to support 2 to 3 years
worth of passenger rail demonstrations, during holiday weekends and
other peak periods.
In the first year, ITS technology was integrated
at different levels during the demonstration including TxDOT’s Dynamic
Message Signs along the IH 45 corridor, the texasgulfliner.com website, and the
1-877-GALRAIL information and ticketing hotline. The demonstration
project is serving as a
template to build support for regular passenger rail service between
Galveston Island and the Mainland. Anticipated project benefits
include: reduced vehicle miles traveled, reduced congestion along IH
45, reduction in pollutants from passenger vehicles, increased
mobility within Galveston County and the Houston-Galveston region,
and the creation of economic development opportunities within the
region.
The coalition of support for the rail demonstration program on the
mainland includes the city of Texas City, the City of La Marque, the
City of Webster, the City of League City, Destination League City,
the Galveston Economic Development Alliance,
and The
Galveston Railroad Museum and Depot
and other interested parties. Members of the
Mainland Coalition (Coalition) who have been interested in the
project have committed time, effort, in-kind services, and other
resources to support their participation, should an on-going
demonstration of ITS rail passenger service be initiated.
